Hello my name is Howard. I suffered a spinal cord injury on October 18, 2018 and I am a quadriplegic. have lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan almost all of my 58 years. I was… or still am a social worker and have practiced continuously for 32 years until the accident. Work was a large part of my identity. So was being a husband, family member, friend, golfer, and more. I loved being active and outdoors. Overall, my life was great.
Then the accident. The old Howard died that October day and this new one is figuring out his place in this new world of being handicapped. This blog is intended to give the reader updates on my current status while delving into past struggles in my rehabilitation.
I have posted updates on a website called Caring Bridge for the past year and a half. A few followers urged me to start a blog and I thought I’m already doing a blog! So I did some research and discovered blogging was primarily done on a personal website. I kind of knew this already but it got me thinking about branching out more.
My target audience could be other people who have suffered spinal cord or other debilitating injuries. Or loved ones of those who are suffering. Family and friends, many of which have followed me on Caring Bridge. Or anyone interested in following someone’s struggles with recovery from a catastrophic injury.
Everyone’s recovery from a SCI is unique. I won’t say mine is worse or better than others but it has gone off the rails countless times. As my first physical therapist said, “Howard, whatever could go wrong has gone wrong for you.” I will recount what has happened previously, along with current thoughts and updates. So read away and I hope you find something helpful, interesting, or entertaining. I welcome anyone to reach out to me.
