The Wolfpack Book Club Meets Again

I’ve had a pretty busy Saturday, which is good. I met with the Wolfpack Book club at Schuler’s from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. We reviewed a couple books that we read recently.

I took the Go Bus, which is public transportation for people with disabilities. The driver tried to buckle me in the far back corner, a tight fit behind some seats. The poor lad spent 10 minutes trying to buckle me in. He finally gave up. He asked another passenger in a manual wheelchair to move forward while I took his place and got buckled in.

I love meeting with the Wolfpack crew. We’ve been doing this for about a year. We are now at three and will expand to four people.

Melody Edwards is a former coworker of mine at Cherry Health. We were part of the DBT program. She is currently an outpatient therapist. Amy Edwards Bannon is Melody’s sister and she works at a school.

The two books we read were “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jeanette McCurdy and “The Keeper of Stories” by Sally Page. It had been so long since we read the Sally Page novel. We needed to compare mental notes to get reacclimated to the book. Overall, we gave a thumbs up on the first book and a thumb sideways the latter book.

The Wolfpack will reconvene next month to review “Sapiens”.

We meet approximately every 6-8 weeks. Every other meeting has been wonderfully hosted by Melody who usually serves a delicious lunch.

This is always a safe meeting for me. The Café is easy for a wheelchair to maneuver around. If something happens, such as a ostomy or catheter issues, both are willing to roll up their sleeves and help out.

I need to expand my horizons. I go to Schulers because it is close, the café is spread out and large, and if I’m early I just scroll around and look at books.

I’ll do some research and see what other places we could meet. Problem is, most coffee shops are small for a power wheelchair. Even restaurants and having to navigate between tables and people sitting in the chairs.

I gotta push myself though. I’ll research restaurants or maybe even a bar to look at.

So I’m going to be brave and schedule a time with family or friends to shop or meet for a drink. It will be a place that I have not been to yet in my wheelchair. I’m open to any suggestions from those of you familiar with the Grand Rapids area. And I will report my progress.

  1. If the weather is nice, you might try Bluewater Grill. I noticed last time when I was there they have a ramp that leads directly to the outside seating. I thought the tables were spaced well, but I admit I wasn’t thinking about a power chair. I love their food and the view of the lake (or the gravel pit as we knew it growing up!)

    1. Great suggestion. I’ve been there in years I remember liking the place. I laughed out loud you mentioned the gravel pit.
