A couple of months ago the therapeutic rec department started a few different Coffee and Conversation Groups to get residents out of the building and interacting. Covid put a wrench on group outings for a couple of years. I am grouped with three other guys roughly my age. I jokingly call these outings ‘play dates’ as we have a couple of Rec Therapists supervising us.
Our destination is Schuler’s Bookstore café as it is a nice open area friendly for power wheelchairs to maneuver. I never drank coffee until about 12 years ago when my mother purchased a coffee percolator while visiting from Florida during the summer. I just sprinkled hazelnut creamer and called it good for several years until after my accident a few years ago. There was a Biggby Coffee shop at Mary Free Bed rehabilitation hospital. My OT at the time, Riley, bought me the Teddy Bear coffee. I was sold to Boucher coffee sense.
One of the guys in the crew also has a CSI and drives a power wheelchair. One suffered a stroke several years ago and walks with a walker and another as a mild TBI. These latter two gentlemen live in different homes. We are all Detroit Lions fans so we talk a lot of football. The Lions I have only one one playoff game in all of our lifetimes (the oldest is 63). I’m not sure what is more pathetic. That the Lions have only won one playoff game all these years or that we still remain fans of the team.
Evan is one of the rec therapists who is 24 years old. He is an easy target to tease being so young and easily embarrassed. He turned down my offer to be his wingman when a cute girl was working behind the counter.
My choice of coffee is usually dark chocolate mocha with oat milk and hazelnut. These drinks are not cheap so I’m reluctant to experiment with other drinks.
