I go on weekly therapeutic recreation outings to improve my emotional, social, physical well-being. It has helped reduce stress and build confidence in my ability to reconnect with society being wheelchair bound.
This wasn’t a problem prior to my injury.
I had a wide variety of interests and opportunities to participate. Golf was my favorite activity and I played it probably too many times. It was a one-sided relationship. I loved the game much more than it reciprocated back.
I was notorious for having meltdown rounds and my temper would go to DEFCON five. On one round, a recovering alcoholic offered to buy me a couple of beers to soothe me out. I did not take him up on this.
And now I try to develop new interests or re-engage with old interests while being in a wheelchair.
I had a delightful outing a few weeks ago. I went to the Happy Cat Cafe with my Rec Therapist, Emma. It is a place where you can have some coffee and interact with some furry creatures.
None found me overly interesting but one little guy found by wheelchair fascinating. He found a comfort spot around my wheel as you can see in the photos.
I recommend checking this place out if you love cats and may be interested in adopting one.
