Howard Falkinburg

A blog about my rehabilitation and recovery from a spinal cord injury that left me paralyzed with quadriplegia.

Back in the Saddle Again

”The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Gandhi

“As you grow older, you discover that you have two hands–one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.“

Audrey Hepburn

“Service to others is the rent U pay for your room here on earth.“

Muhammad Ali

I bet you worked expecting quotes from Audrey Hepburn, Muhammad Ali and Gandhi when you opened this blog.

Since the injury, one of my goals is to work again. It’s been a long process as I have been in and out of hospitals for three years after my injury. It’s been a year since my last hospitalization (knock on wood).

I am an LMSW and was a therapist at my last job. I feel that after surviving this trauma gives me better insight and perspective, which will make me a more effective therapist.

I started volunteering last November with a nonprofit organization called Family Futures. They provide support for parrots with children up to the age of five in achieving emotional and physical milestones. The agency sends parents an Ages and Stages questionnaire periodically. If they don’t send them back, then I call the parent as a gentle reminder to return them.

It’s not brain surgery but I’m doing something outside of my little world at Hope Network. I feel reconnected with the community while doing a service for people.

Plus it gives me a sense of purpose.

So here is to taking baby steps on my road to recovery.
