I am blessed to have technology and people as supports for me beyond family and friends. I’ll rummage through them in no particular order.
I have two phone mounts for my iPhone with different neck lengths. The short one clips to the arm rest of my wheelchair providing me easy visual and touch access to the screen. The long neck attaches to my hospital tray table. Both necks are strongly reinforced so they don’t wobble around or break easily.
A giraffe water bottle is how I primarily hydrate. People give this baby rave reviews. The neck is extra thick so it doesn’t wobble. It has a bottle holder in the back of my wheelchair. The straw is 25 inches long and wraps over my right shoulder so I have easy access to drink. It’s important for me to keep hydrated because of kidney stones. I drink at least 3 L per day. I have a little PTSD going on with the straw. My face has been poked, prodded, and stabbed by staff accidentally bumping into it.
My iPhone Siri has voice control, which is a godsend for me. I go through emails, blog, read articles, do online purchases, etc. I have a Tobii Dinavox, which is the equivalent of a Microsoft Surface Pro. This has eye gaze and Dragon voice control technology.
And last is my Amazon Alexa device for listening to podcasts, audiobooks, and music through Spotify. It’s also linked with my TV so I can power it on or off, change the channel or volume, or watch one of my streaming services.
All of these help me be more independent. I have to thank both of my recreational therapists (Nicole and Kendra) in helping me set up with most of this technology.
